Real Lies True Fake

August 20th, 2008

Last june I graduated at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Real Lies True Fake was one of two projects I did at the Man and Communication department. The project is about truth and perspectives, or perspectives on truth. I started of with the Bayeux Tapestry as an inspiration. A 70 meter long tapestry which which explains the 1066 Norman invasion of England. This very old but sustainable piece of communication inspired me to make a sustainable piece of work myself. I initially thought about making a report on the 9/11 happenings but after doing a few weeks of research on these happenings I was going crazy of all the different ‘truths’ being thrown at me. And found that I telling or showing just one would be nonsense. That is when the project took a turn and became a truth and perspectives project. I then found this beautifull quote:

We live in a multi-dimensional infinity - we are multi-dimensional infinity. Therefore there are infinite perspectives from which to view the same events and all can be different, but equally true. It simply depends where the observer is standing at the time.
David Icke.

To give shape to my project and vision I designed a tangible, one word ’statement’ saying: Real Lies True Fake. Being seen from four different angles, or perspetives, the word says different things about it’s context. Using the words Real, Lies, True and Fake the statement gives different opposing values to the same context and by that explaining it’s point (Like David Icke defines so good).

Real Lies True Fake. I would like to say thanks to Niko de Wit, who taught me about the material and for sharing his artistic vision on my work. My cast iron statement is technically made possible by the proffesional and very helpful people from Geraedts ijzergieterij in Baarlo. Special thanks to Bart Geraedts and sjaak ottenheym.

Last june I graduated Cum Laude at the Design Academy Eindhoven. ‘Hide’ was one of two projects I did at the Man and Communication department. On top of that I was nominated to win the rene smeets price (founder and first director of the academy) / melkweg price. I won the Melkweg price. This one is given for the most authentic design(er) project. See posts below for more about my ‘Hide’ project.

My graduation project ‘Hide’, an intimate ‘pop-up performance’. In the sinking house lives a sad man. Drowning in tears while singing the blues, telling you about his un-faithfull girlfeind. His emotions he made visual in a pop-up book which is to be seen while listening to the song. See the post below for a filmed version of the performance.

I wrote this song, my story, my emotion and then made a visual translation. A pop-up book resulted from that. The real thing can be seen at the Design Academy Graduation Show. It will take place from the 18th till the 26th of october during the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.

Vol is lol

A critical poster I made accompaniment by Annelys de Vet. We were asked to reformulate the Dutch identity through statements, logos, new national flags and posters. What is the dutch identity? In the netherlands their has been an intense debate about intergration and immigration of immigrants. To comment on this I took a well known slogan used by the extreme right parties, Full = Full and transformed it into Full = Fun.
